An apprenticeship interview is not the same as a standard job interview. There is a bit more at stake given the level of commitment needed from both the apprentice and the employer. Employers will invest money on training for the duration of the apprenticeship; therefore they want someone who is enthusiastic about the work and the industry. They’ll want to hire a career-minded individual who can handle responsibilities, balance work and school, and, ideally, stay with the company long after they’ve achieved their certification.
1. Perform research
The interviewer will most likely ask you about your expertise and grasp of the work. There’s no reason to be surprised by these inquiries. Reread the job description and be ready to explain why you are the best applicant for the job. Investigate the company’s website to learn about the services they provide, the projects they are working on, their history, and so on.
2. Become acquainted with yourself
Although this seems to be a straightforward job, some people struggle to ‘sell themselves.’ As a result, answering the question “tell me about yourself” maybe one of the most challenging. The best way to prepare for this is to go through your CV and cover letter again and give specific examples of your achievements, interests, and goals.
3. Put on your finest performance
Don’t show up to an interview dressed in what you think is acceptable for a certain industry. It is critical to make an effort for the interview, regardless of how casual a company may seem once you start working for them. If you wear business/office clothing, you can’t go wrong.
4. Maintain a professional demeanour
According to companies, apprentices may approach interviews too casually. Remember that the interviewees are your potential employers and colleagues, not your friends, at least not yet, so treat them accordingly. Shake hands when greeting and departing, be polite, keep your answers professional (avoid “too much information”), maintain eye contact, smile, and remember to thank the interviewer at the end. It’s also a good idea to check your online presence ahead of time to make sure there aren’t any damning photos of you on social media.
5. Take a long, deep breath
Anxiety is very natural. Most of the time, interviewers do the talking first, explaining the position and so on, allowing you time to relax and think about your responses. Before replying to a question, take a deep breath to relax and give yourself time to think. Sit up straight to improve your breathing and increase your self-esteem.
6. Maintain an optimistic attitude
The spotlight is on you during an interview, but this does not have to be a negative experience. Exhibit your enthusiasm and make your answers cheerful. You will feel better about yourself if you have a positive attitude, which the interviewer will notice.
7. Ask questions
Interviewees often fail to see that this is a two-way street. While the employer is interested in whether you are a good fit for the job, you are also interested in if it is a good fit for you. This is especially important considering the time commitment needed for an apprenticeship. You will be committing to working for the company for at least the amount of years required to earn your certification, and perhaps for some time thereafter. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn all you need to know about the company and your job in order to make an educated decision.
8. Make a day-to-day plan
When it comes to being prepared for your interview, make sure you know where it will take place, when it will take place, and who will conduct it. Plan your route to arrive early, and figure out who you’ll need to inquire for when you arrive. Arriving late for an interview will almost definitely count against you, no matter how apologetic you are.
9. Make a statement
You don’t have to do anything spectacular to make an impression; just examine any experience or skills that may set you apart from the competition. If you’ve done any volunteer or part-time work relevant to the position, try to highlight this while answering questions.
